Nobody talks about what happens to healers after a reading, a ritual, or a deep ancestral session.
We pour into others, but what happens when our own cups run dry?
We absorb pain, trauma, and burdens that don’t belong to us. We hold space for wounds that have festered for generations. We take in energy that lingers long after the session ends. And yet, we’re expected to always be available, always be giving, always be “on.”
But here’s the truth: This work comes with a cost. And it’s more than just money.
The Hidden Toll of Spiritual Work
Most people only see the results, the clarity, the breakthroughs, the healing.
What they don’t see is what happens behind the scenes:
Emotional Exhaustion: Holding space for someone’s trauma can leave a healer drained for days, even weeks. Imagine feeling the weight of a hundred heartbreaks in a single day. That’s what many of us endure.
Physical Symptoms: Many healers experience chronic fatigue, body aches, migraines, and even severe illnesses because of the energy they transmute. Some have even developed life-threatening conditions like cancer due to the stress and energetic overload they take on.
Spiritual Residue: Energy doesn’t just vanish, it clings. Healers often carry the remnants of what their clients release, sometimes leading to restless nights, intrusive thoughts, or even unexpected emotional breakdowns.
Financial Strain: The irony? Many healers are expected to do this work for free or for pennies. Meanwhile, therapists, doctors, and pastors are rightfully compensated for their services. Why should spiritual practitioners be any different?
So, Who Heals the Healer?
If you love and respect your spiritual practitioner, here’s how you can support them:
Respect their boundaries. If they don’t answer your DM or email right away, it’s not personal—they might be in recovery from heavy energy work.
Invest in their services without guilt-tripping them about the price. You wouldn’t negotiate with your doctor or hairstylist—honor the healer’s worth.
Acknowledge the energy exchange. After your session, express gratitude, leave a review, or offer a tip. A simple thank-you can go a long way.
Pray for and uplift your healer. Just as they send you love and protection, send it back to them. We feel it.
Encourage them to rest. A healer who doesn’t care for themselves cannot continue to care for others. Respect their time off, their quiet moments, and their need for solitude.
